We have a large variety of chickens. Some lay blue/green colored eggs; some lay brown in a variety of shades. They all taste the same! So don't be surprised at some pretty-colored eggs in your cartons.
Unwashed EggsUnwashed eggs are eggs that have not undergone any cleaning process to remove dirt, debris, or bacteria from the eggshell. These eggs retain their natural protective coating, known as the bloom, which helps seal the pores in the eggshell and protect the egg from contamination and moisture loss. Unwashed eggs are often considered fresher and may have a longer shelf life compared to washed eggs because the protective bloom remains intact. In the United States, eggs are typically sold unwashed to the end user. These eggs do not require refrigeration and typically last longer. Floating EggsWe highly recommend floating all eggs prior to eating. Fill a mug full of water, deep enough to cover the egg by about an inch. Gently place egg in cup. If it sinks, it's good. If it stands on end, still good, but eat soon. If it floats to the top of the cup, do not use this egg.
***Of course, if any egg looks or smells off, after cracking, please do not eat. It's rare, but sometimes things just go wonky! |
Washed EggsWashed eggs refer to eggs that have been cleaned to remove dirt, debris, and bacteria from the eggshell. This cleaning process typically involves washing the eggs with warm water and at Murie Farm we like to use vinegar as our sanitizer. Washing eggs can help improve their appearance and cleanliness, but it also removes the natural protective coating (bloom) that helps seal the pores in the eggshell, making them more susceptible to contamination and spoilage.
Current egg prices as of 7/8/2025 One Dozen = $3 18-Pack = $4 All eggs are sold as unwashed, unless they are a bit dirtier, (i.e. when it rains they tend to be muddier) then we will wash these in the vinegar wash. If you would prefer washed eggs, just let us know, and we will be happy to wash them for you ahead of time. |
